Something from the past…

As I was scouring my old archives I found this compilation I would like to show you. These images are part of a collection from almost 20 years ago taken from Quake2 and Quake3 engine tests. I made *many* maps but moonbase was always my goal to perfect my art. *deep breath* So these are some of my earliest works from The Way Back Machine. Please bear with the nostalgia..

This archive represents my first works with quake3 and creating models. At the time, shader language and q3map2 were still in their infancy.  Blender was not perfect, so creating md2’s and md’3 and lwo models was not easy, especially working with open source linux tools. Couldn’t afford autocad and all the expensive software. I compiled from scratch just to make the tools. Photoshop? Hell no, used gimp. Compiled from scratch…

*another deep breath* I hoped some of you will appreciate the development process back then, especially being only one person.  Remember – This is almost 20 years ago… So here we go.

It first began with a texture. I needed a moonrock texture. Scoured the NASA archives and found this and went from there. If I remember right, it was a closeup from the apollo missions I texturized and made seamless.

Moonrock texture

Now I had the moon look so I started next on the basic land mass. The orange texture was a placeholder until I could work on shaders.

First start

Now that I was liking the terrain i moved onto the dome and catwalks a bit more.

Moon base biodome catwalks

Seemed ok for gameplay. Kept going. Here is an exterior view.

Biodome outer view

Liked it so it was time to add plants.

Biodome version 1

By this time I begun to understand blender and the workflow, so I began some interior places. Here are a few examples.

Mooncave interior

This is also a screenshot of same section in progress. Now at this time i should note I soon began to realize the limitations of q3map2. Not that the engine could not display it but q3map2 had issues with the model. Turns out I had to start chopping things up. Not that it had too many vertices, but it was too large for the light map. Other issues too – for anyone that tried serious mapping for id tech 2-4 you know what I mean. Still amazed though what I could accomplish once I figured it all out. Also note the lack of phong shading as these are editor screenshots – and I was still learning vertex shading.

I hope this shows you a little bit about game development and the artists mind. I also leave you these three gems from my quake2 days.

old quake 2 netradiant screenshot

Hey, it was quake 2 – only so much you could throw at a computer back then before people complained about framerates in deathmath and multiplayer.

Another old quake2 screenshot

Again, too many poly’s for people…back then..

Yet another old quake2 screenshot

Just something to post in honor of the old games. When a Voodoo2 and a 486 were king. Just a reminder to us all gamers not to forget our roots. I’ll try to have a few more up soon…

Another congrats to Mr Elon musk.

Seriously dude. Take up all the fly-to’s in one shot. Send me for a personal visit, damn – its pocket change for you.

This is why :

HELL YEA. You have done more for space and this planet in two years then the entire congress  and of the world that has done since 1950. Omg, I wont live that long but steal all the fly-to’s and use them. The more money you make , the quicker we can establish colonies and escape our overseers.

Honestly. Send me an airline ticket to anywhere in the USA, ill have a beer with you and lets make a deal. Night on the town, few drinks, dinner. Go slumming. Shit, you spend more on a car tire. C’mon take a chance…

TEN MINUTES after YOU LANDED IT! Hell yea, your my hero! When you make NASA your bitch that is a true life achievement. Both you and Mr. Branson  have me for dinner.. “This dudes got an idea and in 5 years when we all get artificial bodies and can download our brains to a computer, this might not be a bad investment. Who would’a thought was something we shoulda grabbed while it was cheap…”

“Oh wait!” One said to the other, “How about you buy Fly-To-The-Moon and I’ll buy Fly-To-Mars and the rest we’ll work out…”

Good old Walt Disney saw the swampland for more then what it was. Better enlist a fan rather then a speculator who will destroy it.

Richard Branson You Sir are also brilliant, your combined works can change mankind. I, in no way want to minimize your achievements, but it was proof of concept. Mr Musk landed his rocket and delivered to the space station in 10 f***ing minutes.  I waited longer for PIZZA. Mr Bill Gates, I know your out there, and by my word I – started even before windows 3.1. Feed the poor or just send them to a new colony? I don’t know – not that smart… But The three of you combined? Imagine what you could accomplish for the history books. Seriously. You are all in a position to make a stamp on history even greater then the Romans. They made roads. Do the same thing. Create colonies. Create. Just create. Moon then Mars, enable to do their thing. Inflatable with your rockets and pocket change and bolt it tougher with with Canadarm. Imagine the results, in 2 months you have a full on spinning space station on it’s way to orbit the moon and soon after on from there to mars. And in my vernacular, lets quit fucking around. I’ve said before, Put me in your expensive car and why not, Ill go for the ride. I’m just a monkey.

Send it.  C’mon guys, you can change the world with pocket change.

Thanks google, I had to post this.

Was checking some metrics. All that came up was Frank Sinatra. So Why not? I give you “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra. Whoever provided this, I thank you. Please subscribe to this channel just because…FRANK SINATRA  More people should be reminded of the simpler things in life.

The man could really sing, couldn’t he? Put that in your nickleback and smoke it.

Another test.

I will have some more interior shots soon. Props etc, cargo area’s great for gameplay.  Stay Tuned. Also, somewhat proud of getting the dome to cast the sun shader. The nuances of Q3Map2 can be quite difficult to understand, including the many variations among the mutated versions of the shader language across mutated engines. More or less…the fact i got it to work surprised me. Credit to a unnamed dev who helped me understand painting textures in blender. (old picture, he’s lost to the internet – c*** the polys are mine, the paint was yours. Nice work for a speed test.)

As always, rt click and open in new window for full sized images.

Alternate biodome path.

Someone needs to mow the lawn…

Another view of the biodome.

Render test..  Plants are from youricks blender greenhouse. Looking much better but I need a render farm, this took a day. Grass is simple hair, many tutes on it but meh, it came out nice. However it gave me inspiration for other areas. Nonetheless, here it is..

I especially like the reflections in the glass shader.. guess i got that one right, still angry at the normalmap on the dirt.

I also did a bit of creative writing, inspired by some (rather weird) comments. For those of you in other places of the world, try my post on . Its cheezy sci-fi but meh, it is what it is.
